Healthcare salaries in Switzerland: the official grids, not the promises

The “up to 9,000 CHF!” articles teach you nothing: in Swiss healthcare, salaries are largely collectively agreed or public — they are READ in official grids, class by class, experience year by experience year. Here’s where to find yours, and how to go from the displayed gross to the real net by your canton and status.

National benchmark: the Swiss median salary across all sectors is 7,024 CHF gross/month full-time (FSO, Earnings Structure Survey 2024). Healthcare is little negotiated: your position in the grid depends on your recognised function and your experience — hence the importance of recognition of your qualification (CRS) BEFORE applying.

Where to read YOUR grid (by employer canton)

Geneva — dominant public sector (HUG)

The HUG applies the Canton of Geneva salary framework: 13 monthly payments by function category and seniority, a specific monthly bonus from the 4th month (categories 4-15). The salary scale (classes 4-33, 22 seniority steps) is public — each annual amount reads directly. → Canton of Geneva salary scale · HUG conditions

Vaud — CCT San (para-public health sector)

The Vaud collective agreement publishes its 2026 salary scale in an annex: function → class → annual progression. It’s THE reference for Vaud’s regional hospitals, care homes and home care. → CCT San Vaud documents

Neuchâtel / Jura / French-speaking Bern — CCT Santé 21

2026 salary grid published online, classes and steps consultable. A zone very accessible from France (Pontarlier, Morteau, the Doubs). → CCT Santé 21 grid

The method in 3 steps: 1) identify your SWISS function (nurse with a HES/university degree? ASSC? — not your French title); 2) open the employer canton’s grid above and read annual gross ÷ 13; 3) go to net with the simulator below. Three minutes, zero approximation.

From the grid’s gross to the real net — your canton, your status

Two nurses on 90,000 CHF gross, one a cross-border worker in Geneva, the other resident in Neuchâtel, don’t have the same net — identical contributions, but very different tax and health insurance. Verified 2026 rates:

📍 Geneva: taxation AT SOURCE in Switzerland (1973 agreement), not in France.

The Geneva withholding scale is milder than a resident’s ordinary tax: at equal income, you pay less tax than a canton inhabitant. The gap then widens on RENT and TRANSPORT.

💡 Health option right: LAMal ~489 CHF/month vs CMU ~467 CHF/month.

⚖️ Indicative estimates (2026 rates, sources last reviewed 16.07.2026) based on official averages — they don’t replace personalised tax advice or the official cantonal simulators. The detailed tax breakdown (each country’s official scale, sourced line by line) is in the Decision Engine.

Key takeaways

Common mistakes

Comparing a Swiss gross to your French net. Always net against net — the simulator above does the honest calculation.
Positioning yourself on the grid with your French title. Aide-soignante DEAS ≠ ASSC: the class (hence the salary) depends on the equivalence obtained.
Forgetting that “up to X CHF” = end of career. Read the grid at YOUR entry step, with the seniority recognition negotiable at hiring.

Frequently asked questions

Does my French seniority count? Often partially: the recognition of experience years at hiring is negotiated and reads in the CCT rules — ask for it explicitly, in writing.
Public or private, who pays better? The public/para-public sector is collectively agreed (grids above); the private is free — sometimes above, sometimes below, without guaranteed progression. Compare real offers, not averages.
And night premiums? Set by your CCT (published hourly amounts). On a regular night schedule they change the monthly pay significantly — but check their tax treatment on the French side if you’re a cross-border worker.
