Care assistant in Switzerland: first, the truth about your qualification

Switzerland recruits care assistants — but it does not recruit “DEAS holders”: your French qualification does not transfer as-is. Two routes exist, with two salary levels attached, and the wrong choice (or no choice at all) costs months. Here is the honest path.

The closest Swiss title to the DEAS is the ASSC (healthcare and social-care assistant) — a 3-year apprenticeship, longer and broader than the French course. It is the gap between the two programmes that creates "the trap": recognition is neither automatic nor impossible.

The two routes (and what they change)

Route 1 — ASSC recognition (via the SRC)

You aim for the full equivalent: the SRC reviews your DEAS and your experience; compensatory measures are common (top-up training or practice) given the difference in curriculum. A B1 level in a national language is required. This is the longer route — and the one that opens the best salary band.

Route 2 — The "SRC health-care auxiliary" equivalence

More accessible and faster for putting your nursing experience to work: it positions you as a health-care auxiliary — lower on the grid than the ASSC, but quickly employable, especially in nursing homes and home care. Many start here WHILE route 1 moves forward.

The right instinct: the SRC PreCheck online (free, mandatory) — this is what tells you which route your file allows, evidence in hand, before you spend a single franc.

Salary: decided by your recognised title, read off a grid

As with all of Swiss healthcare, your salary is not negotiated in a vacuum — it is read off the grid of your collective agreement, at the band of YOUR recognised title:

ASSC and health-care auxiliary are not in the same band — that is the whole financial consequence of the route you choose. The method for reading the grids is detailed on our healthcare-salaries page; we copy across no figure (the grids are authoritative, and they change).

Where to apply (the realistic order)

  1. Nursing homes and home care — continuous recruitment, the most accessible first Swiss experience; local experience then reopens hospital doors.
  2. Hospitals — often after a first Swiss experience or with the ASSC recognised.
  3. Qualified temp work — a respected route in Switzerland (not a demotion), very active in care.

The application process follows the Swiss standard — a complete file, contactable references, a CV in the local codes with your SRC situation stated clearly — detailed in applying in Switzerland.

Practical tips

Common mistakes

Applying "as a care assistant" without equivalence. The employer cannot place you on the grid — the file stops there.
Confusing ASSC and health-care auxiliary. Two titles, two bands, two salaries — check what YOUR job offer states.
Underestimating the language requirement. B1 conditions the equivalence — start classes at the same time as the PreCheck if needed.
Aiming only at the hospital. Months of rejections while nursing homes are hiring — and they lead to the hospital after a year of local experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is my French DEAS recognised as-is in Switzerland? No — and that is THE point this guide exists to make. The closest Swiss title is the ASSC (a 3-year apprenticeship qualification): recognition runs through the Swiss Red Cross (SRC), often with compensatory measures. The faster alternative is the 'SRC health-care auxiliary' equivalence, more accessible but positioned lower on the grid.
Where are the jobs open to a first Swiss experience? Nursing homes (EMS) and home care recruit continuously and are the classic way in — the hospital often comes after a first local experience. Qualified temp work is also a respected route.
What salary should I aim for? It is read off the grid of YOUR collective agreement (CCT Santé 21, CCT San Vaud, Geneva's public grids) at the band matching your RECOGNISED title — which is why the equivalence decides your salary, not your French experience alone.
